The CHP officers responded to a collision call around 1:30 p.m. on southbound 99, just south of Lander Avenue.

They discovered a 2011 Buick SUV colliding with the rear of a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer combination on the west shoulder.

According to preliminary investigation, the Bakersfield semi-driver pulled over after noticing a mechanical issue with his trailer.

The 51-year-old woman driving the SUV moved onto the shoulder and collided with the trailer’s rear for unknown reasons.

The woman was taken to the Doctors Medical Center with serious injuries and later died. The semi’s driver escaped injury.

It’s unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

The woman was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the CHP, but would have survived if she had been because the interior of the SUV did not come into contact with the trailer.
