In 2021, the National Safety Council predicted a substantial increase in railroad-related fatalities. There were 893 fatalities, a 20% increase from the 744 fatalities in 2020 and the greatest since 2007. In 2021, 5,781 nonfatal injuries were reported, a 4% increase from the previous year’s 5,544 cases.

These numbers show trends in railroad crossing fatalities and other accidents. From 2020 to 2021, fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased by 21%, while deaths from other accidents increased by 20%. 94% of casualties in the latter category, 617, were caused by trespassers. Improving safety and raising awareness about railroad crossings and trespassing are essential for reducing these tragic incidents.

The data also sheds light on railroad industry fatalities and injuries. While the number of workers slain on the job remained unchanged at eleven in 2021, passenger fatalities increased. Compared to the two documented deaths in 2020, six train passengers perished in 2018. These statistics highlight the need for comprehensive safety measures for railroad employees and passengers.
