Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Motorcycle riders travel at the same speeds and on the same roads as automobiles, but they lack the same safety equipment.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles are responsible for 11% of all traffic accidents in the United States (NHTSA). In 2018, there were 82,000 motorbike injuries and 4,985 motorcycle deaths.

This number is not surprising given that motorcyclists are 16 times more likely than passengers in enclosed vehicles to be injured or killed in a car collision.

The unpleasant reality is that motorcyclists in California are not exactly safe. California has the most registered motorcycles in the US, with over 800,000 registered motorcycles. In 2017, 16,505 motorcycle incidents occurred on California highways, resulting in 15,527 injuries and 541 fatalities.

Some motorists may have difficulties seeing motorbikes, especially at night. Wearing bright clothes is a good way to catch the attention of other drivers on the road. This may not fit some people’s fashion standards, but staying safe on the road is more important than making a fashion statement.
