[05-24-2024] One Person Killed After Big Rig Vs. Vehicle Wrong-Way Collision Along Highway 101 in San JoseOne person was killed after a big rig vs. vehicle wrong-way collision in San Jose on Friday morning, May 24, 2024.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. on Highway 101 just north of Blossom Hill Road.

CHP said that a Honda sedan was traveling north in the wrong direction after entering the southbound lane of Highway 101 from Blossom Hill Road. Moments later, the Honda crashed head-on against a southbound big rig tractor-trailer.

It is said that the driver of the big rig tried to swerve to avoid crashing into the wrong-way vehicle but was too late. The impact of the crash spun the Honda around before stopping at the center median of the highway.

Meanwhile, the big rig sustained significant damage, and its carried diesel fuel flowed into the roadway. Caltrans and the San Jose Fire Department worked together to clean up the spill.

CHP confirmed that the Honda driver, only identified as a 22-year-old man from San Jose, died as a result of the incident. The big rig driver, on the other hand, appeared to be uninjured at that time.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. It is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role in it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP at (408) 961-0900.

First, you should check on all passengers, drivers, and pedestrians involved. If they need medical help, call for an ambulance immediately. Make sure that you don’t move anyone who is unconscious or reports back or neck pain unless their life is in imminent danger, for example, from a fire or oncoming traffic. Since car accidents are unexpected, you also need to do the following:

  1. Call the police to report any deaths, injuries, or substantial property damage. Get the names and badge numbers of the officers who are at the scene of the accident. Later, call the police department and request an accident report.
  2. Take pictures of all parties involved, including their driver’s licenses, insurance cards, and respective vehicles. Remember to capture any visible damages, skid marks, and the vehicles’ points of rest.
  3. Take note of the street names, traffic lights, and signs.
  4. Talk to the witnesses and obtain their phone numbers and addresses.
