Rollover Crash Statistics

When a car loses its balance on the road and flips onto its side or top, this is called a rollover accident. In these kinds of accidents, it’s possible that the car will flip over more than once.

In 2017, 2,750 people died in rollover accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA). Even though rollovers are not the most common kind of car accident, they are the most dangerous.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that about 3% of all car accidents involve a rollover (NHTSA). On the other hand, about 35% of all passenger vehicle deaths are caused by accidents in which the car rolls over or tips over.

Most rollover accidents happen because the driver loses control of the car. Drivers who use their phones, fall asleep at the wheel, or do other things that take their attention away from the road risk losing control and concentration.

Airbags and seat belts are the best way to keep from getting killed in a car accident. Slowing down your car can also save your life, because the impact is less severe the slower you go.

Brace your feet against the floor once the car has stopped moving to keep your body still and analyze the damage you and your passengers have sustained.

Following a car accident, everyone should run their hands over their head/hair to check for broken glass, blood, or other severe injuries that may not be immediately apparent. Reset your neurological system with a few deep breaths. Do not move anyone who is injured. Immediately dial 911.
