How to Protect Yourself After a DUI Accident in West Sacramento, CA

If you or a loved one has been injured in a DUI accident, your safety and well-being should be your first priority. Here’s what you should do after an accident involving a drunk or drugged driver:

  1. Immediately check yourself and others for injuries. Look for visible signs like bruises, cuts, or broken bones, and pay attention to any pain that might suggest internal injuries.
  2. Make sure you and others are in a safe location. If the accident happened in a dangerous spot, like a busy road, try to move to a safer area, but only if it won’t worsen anyone’s injuries.
  3. Call 911 or ask someone nearby to do so. Law enforcement will document the scene, perform sobriety tests, and arrest the intoxicated driver if necessary. They will also file an official report.
  4. Allow emergency responders to assess your condition and provide first aid. If they recommend it, go to the hospital for further treatment. Seeking medical care right away helps with your recovery and provides important records of your injuries.
  5. While waiting for the authorities, collect key information, including the other driver’s name, contact details, and insurance information. Don’t forget to get witness contact details, as their statements may help your case.
  6. Take pictures and videos of the scene using your phone. Capture vehicle damage, visible injuries, and signs of intoxication, like open alcohol containers. This evidence can support your claim.
  7. Consider contacting an experienced DUI accident lawyer in West Sacramento. A skilled attorney can help protect your rights and guide you through the process.
