[05-28-2023] Santa Clara County, CA – DUI Speeding-Related Car Accident Claims One Life, Leaves Another Injured in Sierra Nevada Foothills

A man named Jesus R. from Modesto died, and another person was injured in a DUI speeding-related car accident in Siera Nevada Foothills, Santa Clara County, on Sunday evening, May 28, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol said the incident was reported at 5:07 p.m. on Highway 49 south of Jamestown.

According to the report, the GMC Yukon traveling in the southbound direction on the highway entered the roundabout at a high rate of speed and executed a hazardous turning maneuver. The truck collided with a light pole, resulting in multiple overturns, ultimately causing the driver to be ejected.

Following the accident, the driver, identified 40-year-old from Modesto, was transported to a hospital in Modesto, where he succumbed to his injuries.

As the pickup truck overturned, one of its tires came off and hit a northbound vehicle, resulting in minor injuries to a second driver, a man from Stockton.

The CHP said alcohol or drugs are suspected as a factor in the crash.

The roundabout near the Chicken Ranch Casino has been open since September. On the two-lane Highway 49, the speed limit is 55 mph, but signs at the roundabout advise drivers to slow down to 20 mph.
The investigation is ongoing.
