Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

A car collision occurs every sixty seconds somewhere in the United States. Given the millions of cars that travel the country’s highways every day, this is unsurprising.

Traffic congestion, gridlock, and (most importantly) car accidents resulting in death or serious injury are unavoidable when so many vehicles share the same highways.

In Southern California, Orange County is part of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. Orange County had a population of 3,010,232 people in 2010, making it the state’s third-most populous county. Its population outnumbers the population of 21 other states in the United States.

In 2017, there were 31,004 accidents in Orange County, resulting in 21,646 injuries and 188 deaths. If you keep track, there are 84 accidents per day in the county.

These tragedies are made worse by the fact that the vast majority could have been avoided. Car accidents are caused by a variety of factors, including drunk driving, distracted driving, speeding, and disregard for traffic laws. Approximately 80% of all traffic accidents are caused by distracted driving.
