[05-29-2023] Alameda County, CA – Two East Bay Cyclists Severely Injured After Being Trapped by Construction Fence During Bike Ride in Berkeley

Jonathan C. and Amy S., two cyclists from the East Bay, sustained severe injuries when they were trapped by a construction fence while out for a bike ride in Berkeley on Monday afternoon, May 29, 2023.

According to the Berkeley Fire Department, the incident occurred on I-80 Gilman Street Interchange Project.

The report said that two couples were trapped by a construction fence during a bike ride, injuring both parties. Schoenblum suffered a broken arm and wrist. The victims were promptly transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

The construction fence had been installed by Caltrans as a safety precaution during the construction of the I-80 Gilman Street Interchange Project.

Caltrans and the contractor are collaborating to address the situation and plan to reinforce the fence by June 1, 2023.

The couples anticipate upcoming medical appointments and potential rehabilitation for Schoenblum. Caltrans representatives informed them that they could file a claim with the department.
