What to Do After a Boat Accident

Water accidents are widespread, and the last thing any boater wants is to get involved in one. But since things tend to be quite unpredictable, it helps prepare you for what might happen when you’re out there.

  • Knowing what to do right after a boating accident helps to prevent further damage and injury and helps you to collect essential information to protect your rights:
  • Safety Comes First. It’s best to remain calm and ensure your boat engine isn’t running. Everyone in the boat must wear a life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD).
  • Seek medical attention. In some cases, injuries may not be apparent after the accident. You and other victims might need medical attention after the authorities record everything.
  • Gather Information. In order to gather vital information from witnesses and those on the boat, you’ll need to be sure that everyone is okay and out of danger.
  • Call Your Boat Insurer. It’s important to inform your insurer if your boat was involved in an accident, no matter who was at fault.
  • Call Maritime Police. When an accident occurs, call the U.S. Maritime Police. They will provide you with an accident report to help shed light on how the accident occurred. You’ll also need this report when reporting the case to the authorities and filing an insurance claim.
  • Report to the Authority. A casualty or accident report must be submitted to the relevant authority under federal law (33 CFR 173.55).
  • Get Legal Support. Contact (888) 488-1391 or click the “Do I Have a Case?” on our website to schedule a free consultation with one of our lawyers.
