Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

In the state of California, bicycles are regarded as vehicles. The rules of the road apply equally to bicyclists and motorists, so collisions can be avoided. They must stop at all red lights and ride in a straight line, among other things.

All modes of transportation, including bicycles, are subject to the same rules. When there isn’t a designated bike lane, they can ride in the middle of the road. A driver who rides too close to a cyclist is more likely to ignore or pass the cyclist.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) data shows 840 cyclists were killed by vehicles in 2016, accounting for 2.2% of all road deaths.

Bicycle accidents are the leading cause of death in California. Between 2016 and 2018, more than 400 California cyclists were killed in traffic accidents.

It’s essential for cyclists to always wear helmets, inspect their bike’s tires and brakes, and make sure their bodies are proportional to the bike they ride in order to avoid injury.
