Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics
In the State of California, a commercial vehicle is defined as a vehicle used or maintained for the transportation of persons for hire, compensation, or profit, or a vehicle designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property. Ambulances are considered commercial vehicles.
Every year, around 6,500 ambulances are involved in accidents. At least one occupant of a vehicle involved in the incident was injured or killed in 35% of the cases. When injuries occur, there are three distinct injuries per collision on average. Every year, 29 deadly ambulance incidents result in 33 fatalities.
The majority of crashes and fatalities happened during emergencies and at junctions. Most injuries were sustained by people who were not in the ambulance. People in the back compartment were more likely to be hurt than those in the front.
Distracted driving, intoxicated driving, and driver exhaustion are all factors that contribute to these collisions.
When an ambulance is around you, make sure to give them enough room to move. The larger the vehicle, the more room it needs to make safe turns. Remain mindful of commercial vehicles’ turn signals, and slow down to allow them all the space they need to make their turns or lane changes.
