Statistics on Fatal Motorcycle Accidents

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, 5,014 motorcyclists died in accidents in 2019. Motorcycle fatalities had declined since the early 1980s, but they began to rise again in 1998 and remained stable until 2008.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely than car passengers to be injured in a crash and 35 times more likely to die.

Almost two-thirds of motorcycle accidents happen at intersections because motorists fail to notice the motorcycle. Because of their size, motorcycles are involved in more traffic accidents.

Most California roads are featured in the ‘Top 100 Motorcycle Roads’ section of motorcycleroads.com, an online motorcycle road, tour, and event guide. Motorcycles are registered in greater numbers here than anywhere else in the country. About 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state.

In 2017, 15,527 people were injured, and 541 people died in motorcycle accidents in California, according to estimates.
