[06-17-2023] Sonoma County, CA – Community Saves Horses and Injured Drivers in Bodega Bay Highway Crash

[06-17-2023] Community Saves Horses and Injured Drivers in Bodega Bay Highway CrashCasie H. and other drivers were injured, while several horses were rescued after a collision involving two vehicles on Bodega Bay, Sonoma County, on Saturday afternoon, June 17, 2023.

The Sebastopol and Graton Fire Departments’ large animal rescue teams were dispatched around 3:40 p.m. to aid in the collision on Highway 1 near Bodega Bay.

According to the report, Heron, a Horse N Around Riding Trails driver, was driving a Ford F-250 pickup truck with an attached horse trailer that veered off the highway and tumbled down an embankment.

The incident occurred just 1.5 miles from the beach, where the horses had recently finished a run. A Honda Civic made a hazardous left turn from Doran Park Road, trying to enter the northbound lane, resulting in a collision with Herron’s truck despite her attempts to brake.

Upon impact, the Ford truck propelled the sedan for a brief distance until the Civic halted while the car veered off the east side of the road, tumbling down the embankment. Despite the truck’s overturning, the trailer remained in an upright position.

Upon arrival, three horses remained trapped in the trailer due to shifted mats, making escape difficult. After approximately 90 minutes, the rescue team freed the horses by securing a tow rope and pulling them toward the exit. Meanwhile, a passerby broke branches around Herron’s seat to enable her safe exit from the vehicle.

Herron and the other driver sustained minor to moderate injuries, while the horses, evaluated by a veterinarian, displayed “bumps and bruises” without any fractures.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
