Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

California law considers bicycles to be vehicles. To prevent collisions, motorists and cyclists must adhere to the same set of traffic laws. They have to stop and ride straight when they encounter a red light.

The same laws apply to bicycles and other forms of transportation like vehicles. They can ride in the street when there isn’t a designated bike lane. Drivers frequently ignore or try to pass cyclists who ride too closely.

According to National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) data, 840 cyclists were killed by cars in 2016, making up 2% of all traffic fatalities.

The majority of fatalities in bicycle accidents occur in California each year. In California, between 2016 and 2018, traffic accidents claimed the lives of more than 400 cyclists.

Effective bicycle safety measures include donning a helmet, maintaining your tires and brakes regularly, and making sure your body is in proportion to the size of your bike.
