According to CHP Officer Eric Zuniga, the crash occurred at 1:00 a.m. on Highway 99 near Atwater.

The suspect was identified as Angel M., 47, of Riverbank.

According to Zuniga, Manzo was traveling south on Highway 99 from Westside Boulevard in the northbound lanes of a 2014 Mercedes sedan.

DUI Accident Statistics

Road safety is a fundamental human right. Drunk drivers jeopardize the lives of others. Strict laws are in place across the country to reduce drunk driving cases.

Driving while intoxicated is a negligent act. Any driver who becomes intoxicated and chooses to drive puts all other drivers on the road in danger of injury or death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 10,000 people are killed in DUI accidents. Approximately 18% of fatal car accidents are caused by alcohol or other drugs.

Over 30,000 Californians are seriously injured, and over 2,000 people are killed in alcohol and drug-related car accidents every year. The state’s blood alcohol content (BAC) criteria for DUI and DWI (driving while intoxicated) differ depending on the driver’s age and whether the vehicle is private or commercial.

Drunk drivers frequently struggle to see, make sound decisions, and respond appropriately in dangerous situations. Driving drivers’ impaired senses and mental state while navigating these hazardous road obstacles make a drunk driver an even greater danger and risk to the public’s safety along California’s most dangerous roadways.
