Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Accidents involving cars frequently result in the death or injury of pedestrians. In contrast to a car accident where the car acts as a shield, a pedestrian collision only has their body to protect them, which is why it’s likely that the victims died at the scene or suffered severe injuries or even death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, California ranked 11th in the nation for pedestrian fatalities in 2018, the most recent year for which data was available. The bad news keeps coming: pedestrian traffic fatalities increased by 12 percent in the state in the first half of 2019. A pedestrian versus vehicle collision leads to the tragic death of a loved one in an unacceptably high number of fatalities.

Car drivers have a greater duty of care to pedestrians than pedestrians have to follow the law. Regardless of whether the pedestrian was involved in the accident, the driver was likely at fault. Thus, we need to drive more carefully.
