Fatal Train Accident Statistics

As a mode of transportation, trains are more efficient than other modes. The conductors’ abilities, appropriate maintenance, and other factors all play a role in passenger and non-passenger safety. These people may take shortcuts or behave carelessly, resulting in harm.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, at least one person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States every two hours. Every year, train mishaps claim the lives of more than a thousand people. This resulted in about 2,300 people being injured and 600 being fatal.

Half of the fatal train collisions are caused by unsafe crossing points, inadequate safety equipment, or warning systems for unsuspecting motorists.

According to the NTSB, the number of pedestrians killed by trains is far greater than the number of motorists killed by trains.

Since 1997, approximately 7,200 Americans have died in train accidents in the United States. Train-pedestrian collisions are now the leading cause of railroad fatalities in the United States.

Derailments, poorly maintained tracks, noncompliance with safety standards, inadequate security, and other forms of negligence are the most common causes of train accidents.
