An unidentified person died after a fatal motorcycle accident in Oakland early on Monday, July 4, 2022.
The fatal collision occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. on I-580, just west of the Lake Park Avenue overpass.
Early reports indicated that a motorcycle that was stopped in the second lane without its lights on was struck by a Dodge pickup that was moving east on the freeway.
The Dodge was going at freeway speeds and could not avoid the crash. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown into the lanes of traffic, where an SUV hit him.
Both the Dodge and the SUV’s drivers stayed on the scene and helped the police with their inquiries.
Alcohol and drugs were not considered factors in the collision.
There are no other details available.
The crash remains under investigation.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation recorded 5,014 motorcycle fatalities in 2019. Since the early 1980s, it had been steadily decreasing, but in 1998 it started to rise again and remained stable until 2008.
Motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a collision than car passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Nearly two-thirds of motorcycle accidents occur at intersections because drivers fail to see the motorcycle. Motorcycles are more likely than larger vehicles to be involved in traffic accidents because of their smaller size.
Most of the roads in California are listed on motorcycleroads.com’s ‘Top 100 Motorcycle Roads’ section. The number of motorcycles registered in this state is higher than in any other state in the United States. The state has a total of about 800,000 motorcycles on its books.
In 2017, an estimated 15,527 motorcycles were injured, and 541 were killed, according to estimates.
