Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
According to the NHTSA report, one pedestrian is killed in traffic every two hours. Furthermore, one pedestrian is injured every eight minutes due to driving.
Each year, approximately 110,000 pedestrians are injured in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 6,227 pedestrians were killed in 2018, up 250 from the previous year.
In California, pedestrian accidents have been on the rise. Around 1,200 pedestrians were killed in 2017, a fifth more than before. Meanwhile, nearly 14,000 pedestrians were injured.
Distracted, speeding, drunk, or reckless drivers cause many pedestrian accidents. They also fail to obey traffic laws and drive in the proper direction.
Pedestrians should always follow safety guidelines to avoid being hit by a car. While there is no guarantee that an accident will not occur, following the safety recommendations dramatically reduces the chances of being held responsible if one does.
Even if pedestrians are cautious and follow all rules, they may be involved in traffic accidents. It’s more challenging to be a defensive walker than a defensive driver. Pedestrians have a harder time getting out of the way of a speeding driver.
