Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

In California, hit-and-run accidents are a big issue, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers who often use city streets and highways. Analysts at ValuePenguin estimate that fatal hit-and-runs rose from 1,342 in 2010 to 1,939 in 2019. Deaths increased by 44 % within the same period, from 1,393 to 2,005.

When a vehicle accident occurs, state traffic laws require the drivers to follow certain procedures. In most cases, those involved in an accident must remain at the scene immediately after it occurs, seek medical attention for anyone who requires it, and wait for the police to arrive.

Drivers typically have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps to assist any injured person, including calling emergency medical services and reporting the accident to local law enforcement. However, if an injured person is immobilized, avoid moving them as this may aggravate or cause a new injury.
