According to the California Highway Patrol, two people died when the 2020 Hyundai they were in crashed into the back of a trailer on U.S. 395 in Inyo County Saturday afternoon, July 16, 2022.
CHP said that the two-vehicle crash occurred around 1:04 p.m. on northbound U.S. 395 near South Haiwee Canyon Road, 31 miles south of Lone Pine.
The CHP said that the deceased is a 23-year-old man from Las Mesa, the driver, and a 22-year-old woman from Ashland who was the passenger. Their names were not released.
According to the CHP, the Hyundai Sonata was approaching a 2006 Freightliner that was traveling north in the same lane of U.S. 395 at a speed of about 65 mph.
Both Hyundai occupants were killed when the Hyundai struck the Freightliner’s rear after failing to slow down.
The 45-year-old Lakewood, Ohio, truck driver was unharmed.
The CHP is still looking into the matter.
