Burn Injury Statistics

1.1 million burn injuries in the US require medical attention yearly (American Burn Association, 2002). About 4,500 of them pass away. Each year, up to 10,000 Americans in the United States pass away from burns-related infections.

Burns are a painful reality of life. Every three hours, one person in the United States dies from burn injuries, which account for 1.5 deaths per 100,000 people or 2.1% of all fatal injuries.

Burn injuries can be physically and emotionally scarring and excruciatingly painful. They also take a long time to heal.

Long-term emotional effects, like post-traumatic stress disorder or recurring nightmares, are common in burn victims. They might be reluctant to return to their regular activities out of concern for getting more burns.
