FATAL BICYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS
Bicycles are considered vehicles under California law. To avoid collisions, motorists and cyclists must follow the same traffic laws. When they come to a red light, they must stop and ride straight.
Bicycles and other modes of transportation, such as vehicles, are subject to the same rules. When there isn’t a designated bike lane, they can ride in the street. Drivers frequently ignore or attempt to pass cyclists riding too close.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 840 cyclists were killed by cars in 2016, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities.
Every year, the majority of bicycle fatalities occur in California. More than 400 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents in California between 2016 and 2018.
Wearing a helmet, regularly maintaining your tires and brakes, and making sure your body is proportionate to the size of your bike are all effective bicycle safety measures.
