Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. As a result, motorists must yield to them while crossing the street or moving in their direction. Pedestrian accidents, like any other type of traffic accident, are based on negligence or imprudence.

According to the 2018 California Office of Traffic Safety data, 893 pedestrians died on the streets, while over 14,000 pedestrians were injured. In California, pedestrian deaths are around 25% higher than the national average. Among all states, California has the greatest number of pedestrian deaths on its roads. Many factors contribute to pedestrian accidents, such as lighting, pedestrian location, overspeeding, alcohol consumption, and distracted driving.

However, being a pedestrian is not without risks. Pedestrian accidents are an issue, especially in California, where the environment in many state regions lends itself to year-round outdoor pastimes.
