What to Do After a Car Accident

Car accidents are unexpected. We must, therefore, always be ready. Whether you are the injured party or the deceased victim’s family, it is essential to understand that your words and actions starting at the accident site can significantly affect the result of your insurance claim or lawsuit. Take into account the following advice to maximize the value of your injury claim:

  • Stay Calm – Ensure everyone is safe on the scene, but check yourself for injuries first. Do not panic, and do not admit fault.
  • Get to a safe place – Move disabled vehicles to the side of the road if possible. Use your emergency lights to prevent further collisions.
  • Call 911 – Call the police and wait for them in a safe place. They will record and gather all details for an official record.
  • Exchange information – If possible, take photographs of the vehicles, license plates, and other vital details, and swap important information with the other driver/s involved.
  • Don’t admit fault – Stick only to the facts of what occurred when talking with the police. Be as detailed as possible when describing the collision.
  • Seek medical attention – Visit the hospital or your doctor immediately to decrease the damages you suffer from injuries, even if you feel fine.
  • Tell your insurance provider – Most insurers have deadlines for when you can report an accident. Follow the agent’s instructions for reporting your crash.
  • Speak to insurance adjusters – The other party’s insurer may call you after the accident. Don’t give any more information than is needed, record a statement, or take a settlement deal without consulting a trusted California car accident lawyer first.
