Bicycle Accident Statistics
Cyclists almost always suffer the most serious injuries when colliding with a car. There were 133 bicycle accident deaths in California in 2019. This was a 19.5% decrease in deaths compared with 2018 when there were 165 bicycle fatalities.
Statistics show that the time of day cyclists ride makes a big difference in how dangerous it is for them. Rush hour is the most dangerous time for anyone on the road, but dusk and sunset can also be very dangerous for bicyclists.
More people in the U.S. are commuting or exercising by bike. When riding a bicycle on public roads, you have the same legal rights and responsibilities as driving a car. The NHTSA’s bicycle safety initiatives encourage bicyclists and drivers to make safer choices to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.
You must equip your bike with accessories that can help you avoid a collision. One of the essential accessories is a good-quality bike helmet. Statistics show that riders who wear helmets are significantly less likely to suffer serious or fatal head injuries in the event of a collision.
San Diego County Bicycle Accident Lawyers
In most cases, a bicycle does not pose a significant threat to a car. Therefore, most laws state that the car must yield to the bike. If a driver collides with a cyclist, the driver may be liable for negligence.
Negligence may be proven if the driver was driving carelessly, driving too fast for road conditions, or did not provide a safe amount of space between their car and the cyclist.
