[07-29-2022] Sierra County, CA - Five People Injured in Head-On Crash on Highway 89Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 89 on Friday, July 29, 2022.

The crash occurred around 5:28 p.m. on Highway 89, south of Sierraville.

Nathanial S., 18, of Garden Grove, California, was operating a 2005 GMC Sierra. He had one passenger and was driving north on Highway 89, south of Sierraville.

Stephen R., 54, of Livermore, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Highway 89, also south of Sierraville. Reikes was traveling in a car with two other people.

The California Highway Patrol reported that Smotrys was asleep when he entered the southbound lane.

As Reikes rounded a sharp turn, he saw that the other car was completely in his lane. Reikes attempted to avoid the collision by swerving into the northbound lane.

As soon as he awoke, Smotrys realized what he had done wrong. Smotrys then swerved back into the northbound lane, causing both cars to crash into each other directly.

Both cars came to rest against a rock wall after rolling to the low side of the road on the east side of the highway.

Numerous good samaritans and off-duty law enforcement/medical personnel helped the parties up until Sierraville Fire arrived on the scene. Additionally, Truckee Fire and USFS responded to the scene and helped with the injured.

Multiple helicopters were used to transport five of the six people involved in the collision to Renown Medical Center for serious injuries.

The CHP is still investigating the crash.
