A 25-year-old dirt bike driver, later identified as Anthony R. of San Mateo, died in a motorcycle accident in San Leandro on Saturday, July 30, 2022.
The San Leandro police responded to the collision at approximately 4:12 p.m. on Washington Avenue near Castro Street.
According to Lt. Matthew Barajas, the dirt bike was traveling north on Washington when it collided with the van.
According to investigators, the motorcyclist was seriously injured. The police took him to the hospital, where he died.
Police said the victim was not wearing a helmet during the crash.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Riding a motorcycle will always be risky, no matter how careful you are. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly 36,000-40,000 people die yearly from injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents in 2018. There were 3,563 fatal accidents in California alone.
These results are alarming but not surprising when other factors such as the region’s size and population are considered. California’s highways are becoming busier and more prone to accidents as their population grows.
Approximately 749 lives could have been saved if all motorcycle riders had worn helmets. Only 20 states in the United States require all drivers to wear a helmet, but it is highly recommended that they do so. Fortunately, helmet use rose by 23% in 2020.
