A 17-year-old pedestrian was killed, and three others were injured in a fatal hit-and-run crash near a south Sacramento shopping center on Saturday, July 23, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred at 3:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Stockton Boulevard at the intersection with McMahon Drive in Fruitridge Manor.
According to a news release from the CHP South Sacramento office, an 83-year-old woman from West Sacramento was driving a 2011 gold Toyota Camry north on Stockton when she suddenly stopped in a left-turn lane as she prepared to turn west into the nearby shopping.
The CHP reported that Marquis J., 29, of Sacramento, was traveling quickly toward the McMahon intersection in a 2010 white Toyota Rav 4.
Officers were informed by the Camry driver and a witness that she turned left across the southbound lanes toward the shopping center before the left-turn signal turned green.
According to the CHP, Johnson did not slow down or stop for the red light, and as a result, the front of the Rav 4 collided with the front of the Camry. Due to the collision, the Rav 4 was forced to veer to the right and onto the sidewalk, where it ran over three people.
According to the CHP, a 17-year-old Pomona boy was struck by a Rav 4 and was killed as a result of his injuries.
Additionally struck by the vehicle were two Sacramento women, ages 56 and 33.
The 56-year-old sustained moderate injuries, while the 33-year-old woman only sustained minor ones. Hospitalized were the two females.
The CHP further stated that the Camry’s driver, a West Sacramento woman, also received minor injuries in the collision and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
The tech sector in Silicon Valley, the fashion and entertainment industries in the Southland, and the state’s propensity to pass more progressive laws are just a few examples of California’s leadership in many fields. However, a surprising number of Californians are uninformed about the state’s high rate of hit-and-run accidents.
In this case, the hit-and-run driver is responsible for abandoning the victim and fleeing the scene. The perpetrator will definitely face criminal charges if they are apprehended again.
Hit-and-runs cause too many car accidents. In 2016, 2,049 people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in the United States. According to AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety data, more than 680,000 hit-and-runs occur in the United States each year. A pedestrian is killed every week on average by a car.
These drivers frequently flee the scene because they are intoxicated or do not have a valid license. They may also be afraid of the consequences of their actions.
