Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

When several vehicles collide, the accident involves multiple vehicles. When six or more vehicles are involved in an accident, it is called a pileup.

When visibility is reduced by bad weather like fog, rain, or snow, multiple-vehicle collisions are more common. As a result, motorists must exercise extra caution and focus on the road. Drivers may not be aware of the risks associated with driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that collisions involving multiple vehicles account for 13,000 fatalities annually or more than 40% of all traffic fatalities.
Drivers frequently lack time to avoid colliding with the vehicles in front of them. Drivers in a state of panic often slam on the brakes prematurely, causing them to veer into oncoming traffic.

A chain reaction that results in an even worse pileup could happen if a driver swerves into oncoming traffic to avoid an accident. Undoubtedly, a collision involving multiple vehicles is one of the fatal car accidents.

To avoid multi-vehicle collisions, keep a reasonable distance between your vehicle and the vehicles in front of you, and drive at a safe speed. A multi-car pileup can be avoided by paying attention to the road and the weather.
