Hit-and-Run Statistics

Hit-and-run is committed when a driver causes an accident involving a pedestrian, another vehicle, or a stationary object and then flees the scene without providing information or aiding the victims.

According to the national AAA, more than five percent of traffic fatalities were caused by hit-and-run drivers. The number of people killed in hit-and-run incidents increased by 60% between 2009 and 2016, to 2,049.

It is generally immaterial in legal proceedings whether you were at fault for the car accident. One need only flee the scene to commit the crime. If you have to leave the scene of an accident to get help, you are generally not guilty of a hit-and-run as long as you return to the scene immediately.
