Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents are a serious problem in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,735 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2016. That’s a 5 percent increase from 2015, with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities recorded since 1990.

Many factors are involved in pedestrian accidents, including distracted driving, more SUVs on the road, and people walking while intoxicated. But one of the biggest problems is that drivers and pedestrians don’t always respect each other’s space.

Drivers need to be aware of their surroundings and be prepared to stop for pedestrians, even if they have the right-of-way. Pedestrians must also be aware of their surroundings and avoid traffic lanes.

If both parties follow these simple rules, we can reduce the number of pedestrian accidents and keep everyone safe on our roads.
