Truck Accident Statistics

Truck accidents can be devastating, especially when they involve a tractor-trailer. These accidents often occur when the truck driver is tired or distracted, leading to serious injuries or even death.

4,842 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes in 2020, down 4% from 2019 but 33% up from 2011. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles is up 18% since 2011, but it is down 5% from 2019. Large trucks are categorized as any medium or heavy truck with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds, excluding buses and motor homes.

In order to help prevent these accidents, it is important to understand the common causes. One of the most common causes of truck accidents is brake failure. When a truck’s brakes fail, the driver may not be able to stop in time, leading to a collision.

Another common cause of truck accidents is mechanical problems. If a truck’s engine fails or its tires blow out, the driver may lose control and crash.

Finally, weather conditions can also contribute to truck accidents. For example, a truck skids on a wet road may jackknife and block traffic. By understanding the common causes of truck accidents, we can help prevent them.
