Big Rig Accident Statistics

Despite being a well-known term for large commercial vehicles, “semi-truck” is just one of many. Tractor-trailers, semi-trailers, and 18-wheelers are considered trucks or “big rigs.”

Because more people die in other traffic accidents, more people die in tractor-trailer accidents. This is true simply because trucks are larger than other types of vehicles. Big rigs need more stopping space as they get bigger. It requires 20% to 40% more room to stop when completely loaded.

In the USA, a semi-truck accident claims one life every fifteen minutes. Around 500,000 trucking accidents occur in the US each year, and 5,000 drivers lose their lives.

A lot of freight is transported in California by a number of big rigs. More than 78% of Californians use large trucks to transport goods.

In California, truck accidents result in 3,000 injuries and 113 fatalities annually. Between 200 and 300 people perish in truck accidents each year in California.

Drivers must leave sufficient stopping distance between their vehicle and a semi-truck to avoid a semi-blind truck’s area.
