Pedestrian Accident Statistics

One pedestrian is killed in traffic every two hours, according to the NHTSA report. Additionally, every eight minutes, a pedestrian is injured by a vehicle.

In the US, there are about 110,000 pedestrian injuries every year. The NHTSA estimates that 6,227 pedestrian deaths occurred in 2018, an increase of 250 over 2017.

In crosswalks, people on foot have the right of way whether the crosswalk is marked or not. Despite having the right-of-way, pedestrians are still required to follow all traffic laws. You must slow down and drive with extra caution when approaching a crossing in order to keep pedestrians safe.

Pedestrians must always follow safety protocols to avoid being hit by a car. Even though there is no guarantee that an accident won’t occur, following safety recommendations significantly lowers the likelihood of being held accountable if one does.

Even though they are cautious and follow all traffic laws, pedestrians are still subject to accidents. Driving defensively presents more of a challenge than walking defensively. When a car is moving quickly, it is much more difficult for pedestrians to run away from danger.
