[08-16-2022] Ventura County, CA- Motorcyclist Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 150 west of Lake CasitasAccording to authorities, a 38-year-old Santa Barbara man was killed in a two-vehicle motorcycle crash on Highway 150 west of Lake Casitas on Tuesday afternoon, August 16, 2022.

The collision occurred on Tuesday at around 2:35 p.m. on the state route, also known as Casitas Pass, on a rural stretch between Lake Casitas and Carpinteria, where the highway winds through ranch properties.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the rider, identified as Nicholas Ryan Cooper on Wednesday, was riding an eastbound 2012 Kawasaki Ninja while a 30-year-old Carpinteria woman was driving west in a 2022 Mazda CX-9 SUV.

According to Officer Vince Rangel of the CHP’s Ventura-area office, Cooper crossed over solid double-yellow lines into oncoming traffic as he approached a turn west of Rameli Ranch.

The CHP described the collision between the motorcycle and the SUV as a “catastrophic crash.”

According to Rangel, Cooper was initially transported by ambulance to the chlorination plant along Highway 150, where he was airlifted to Ventura County Medical Center by a Ventura County helicopter crew. He died later in the hospital.

For a time, lanes were closed due to the incident.

According to the CHP, the SUV driver suffered minor injuries, including cuts to her feet. However, nobody was arrested in this incident.

According to the agency, CHP investigators did not know whether alcohol or drugs were a factor as of Wednesday. It wasn’t clear whether speed was a factor right away. Rangel said a team was still at the accident site on Wednesday, continuing the investigation.

FATAL MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Motorcycle accidents often result in fatalities or serious injuries. Motorcycle collisions are more likely than other vehicle collisions to result in deaths and permanently disabling injuries. Every day, they must deal with everything from head and brain injuries to road rash.

Despite accounting for a small portion of total vehicle sales, motorcycle accidents account for a significant amount of all traffic fatalities in the United States. Even when motorcycle accidents have no fatalities, the victims’ health and well-being can suffer greatly.

Motorcycle fatalities had decreased since the early 1980s, but they began to rise in 1998 and remained stable until 2008.

According to the most recent statistics, there were 5,115 fatalities and 79,000 injuries in motorcycle accidents in 2019. Motorcycles account for only 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States and 0.6 percent of total vehicle miles driven.

Only 14 percent of traffic fatalities, 17 percent of occupant fatalities, and 3 percent of all injuries were caused by motorcyclists among the 8.6 million motorcycles registered in the United States.

Many motorcycle accidents can be avoided by exercising caution, wearing proper protection, and avoiding larger vehicles’ blind spots.
