Fatal Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

Many names for the large commercial vehicles clog up our highways and backroads, including semi-trucks. A semi-trailer truck is referred to by the terms “big rig,” “18-wheeler,” “tractor-trailer, and “semi-trailer.” The commercial vehicle is large, heavy, and clumsy, whatever name you give.

The fatality rate for big rig trucks has increased by 30% since 2009, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the US Department of Transportation. Four thousand one hundred twenty-two people died in significant rig-related traffic accidents in 2017.

Between 200 and 360 fatalities in California have been linked to truck accidents in recent years. Thousands more non-fatal injuries, many catastrophic, are caused by tractor-trailer crashes, which are not included in this number.

The statistics are equally dismal on a national level. According to the most recent FMCSA data, over 4,500 people died in truck-related accidents. Most often, those killed were not the truck drivers but the occupants of the other vehicles.

Backing up a big truck is much trickier compared to a smaller passenger car. Large trucks are generally more challenging to maneuver and have more prominent blind spots. Training is imperative for truck drivers to avoid these frequently fatal accidents.
