According to authorities, two people were hit by a car while crossing the street on a busy Palm Springs street on Friday, August 19, 2022.
According to the police, the incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, when two pedestrians entered the crosswalk and were struck by a car.
The police officers reported that both people were hurt and taken to the hospital. The flashing crosswalk was not operational that night.
The incident happened weeks after someone informed the city that a critical safety feature was broken.
According to Palm Springs resident Matt Robinson, he saw a group stepping off the curb while driving by the flashing crosswalk on Palm Canyon Drive near Prescott Drive a few weeks ago, and there were no flashing lights.
According to him, the people had to jump back to avoid being hit. He said he pulled over and filed a report with the city on July 26th, warning that the flashing crosswalk was “dark to oncoming vehicles.”
Under California law, the pedestrian has the right of way because the collision occurred in a marked crosswalk.
According to the Palm Springs Police Department, the driver has not been charged because of the ongoing investigation.
Robinson took action, putting up makeshift warning signs hoping that pedestrians and the city would take a second look.
PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS
Pedestrian fatalities and accidents have long been a problem in California. The streets of California are filled with people walking to work, shopping, going to school, or strolling for fitness or entertainment. In an era when doctors recommend walking as a healthier alternative to driving, the streets are always congested.
According to the data, metropolitan areas account for 73% of pedestrian incidents, while non-intersections account for 69%. There were 227 traffic fatalities in Los Angeles last year, with pedestrians accounting for 76 of those killed.
Increased pedestrian accidents are also linked to growing populations in California and other states. Increased smartphone use has also led to increased pedestrian accidents and deaths in California.
