Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Riding a bicycle on the street is risky and, occasionally, fatal, especially in congested areas. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2016, 840 cyclists died in motor vehicle collisions or 2% of all traffic fatalities.

Drivers frequently disregard the rights of cyclists by riding too close to them when it is unsafe. This can lead to accidents and even fatalities.

California is the state with the most bicycle-related fatalities and injuries nationwide. These accidents occur more frequently in urban areas where the two modes of transportation are commonly combined. In California, there were 455 cyclist fatalities between 2016 and 2018.

The number of bicycle fatalities this year dropped by 3%, from 871 to 846, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Bicycles and motor vehicles accounted for only 2% of all traffic fatalities.

Bicycles are considered vehicles and must be registered as such. However, cyclists must adhere to the same traffic laws as motorists to prevent collisions. They must follow all traffic regulations, which include always staying in one lane and stopping at red lights.
