Truck Accident Statistics

Tractor-trailers and semi-trucks colloquially referred to as “big rigs,” are a common sight on American roads. Large trucks used for transporting goods go by both of these names.

Tractor-trailer accidents are far more lethal than any other type of car accident. The massive size of big rig trucks is a major factor in this. It takes more time and effort to come to a complete stop in a big rig.

About once every 15 minutes, someone is killed in an accident involving a semi-truck in the United States. Five thousand truck drivers are killed each year in the United States, out of a total of fifty hundred thousand deaths in traffic accidents.

Approximately 113 people are killed, and nearly 3,000 are injured in truck-related accidents each year in California. The annual death toll from truck-related accidents in California is between 200 and 300.

The number of fatalities caused by semi-truck accidents peaked between 2009 and 2015. Speeds greater than 40 mph necessitate the addition of an extra second.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires drivers to maintain a 4-second buffer zone at speeds under 40 mph around large trucks. Over 40 miles per hour requires an additional second.
