According to authorities, two persons riding handmade motorcycles were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident east of Modesto on Tuesday morning, August 23, 2022.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred at around 1:48 a.m. on La Coste Lane, in front of Alice Stroud Elementary School and east of Claus Road.
According to CHP Officer Tom Olsen, a witness saw one of the riders make a U-turn at Frazine Road, “take off westbound (on La Coste), and then they saw the bike shoot up in the air.”
The motorcycle rider who made the U-turn, 26-year-old Modesto resident Antonio Molina R., collided head-on with the second motorcycle.
Both drivers were lying on the ground when officials arrived at the scene.
Handmade motorcycles are not street legal, and both riders were not wearing helmets.
The accident is to be further investigated.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle accidents are not always reported. According to research, accidents in California result in injuries to about 13,000 motorcycle riders yearly. Furthermore, significant injuries occur in about 2,300 motorcycle accidents.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a vehicle was involved in more than half of the 5,114 fatal motorcycle collisions in 2019. Motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be hurt in an accident and 35 times more likely to die in a crash than automobile passengers.
In a collision, motorcyclists are not protected from danger like occupants in a car are. Due to their instability and reduced visibility to other drivers, motorcycles are less safe than different types of vehicles.
