According to the San Diego Police Department, a 43-year-old motorcyclist was badly hurt in a crash on the street in Ocean Beach Thursday evening, August 25, 2022.
The crash occurred around 7:00 p.m. on West Point Loma Boulevard at the intersection with Ebers Street.
A police watch commander wrote that a man driving a Jeep Wrangler tried to turn left at the intersection and “turned into the path of the motorcycle,” which caused a head-on crash. The biker was knocked off his bike and landed on the hood of the other car.
The rider was taken to the hospital with a serious injury—an open ankle fracture—but police said the damage was not life-threatening. The driver of the Wrangler was not hurt, according to the officials.
The crash was still being looked into by traffic detectives from the San Diego police.
Anyone who saw the crash was asked to call the San Diego police non-emergency line or to call Crime Stoppers in San Diego County at 888-580-8477.
Motorcycle Crash Statistics
In 2012, about 8.5 million motorcycles were legally registered in the United States. This number came from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Many people like motorcycles because they are fun, give you freedom, are portable, and aren’t too expensive.
Statistics from the Insurance Information Institute show that there have been an alarming number of motorcycle accidents. Only in 2018, there were about 5,000 motorcycle accidents that killed people.
A motorcyclist was 27 times more likely to die in a car accident for every mile they rode than a passenger.
Motorcycle riders often get broken bones, road rash, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries when they are in an accident.
So, why is it so dangerous to ride a motorcycle? Several things have led to this shockingly high death rate. The main problem is that there isn’t enough safety. The steel frame, airbags, seatbelts, and other safety features of a car protect the people inside from the force of an accident. On the other hand, people who ride motorcycles usually feel the full pressure of an effect.
