Big Rig Accident Statistics

Commercial vehicles, like semi-trucks, are crucial to the economy. Freight hauled by American truckers is worth billions of dollars annually. Other motorists are put in danger by the large number of semi-trucks on the road.

More people are killed in accidents involving semi-trucks than in accidents involving any other vehicle. Big rigs’ massive size makes them difficult to maneuver around for smaller vehicles.

The number of fatal accidents involving large trucks has increased by 30% since 2009, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) maintained by the United States Department of Transportation. About 4,102 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2017 because of careless big rig drivers.

The majority of fatalities and injuries in California occur as a result of collisions involving commercial trucks. In 2019, 3,316 people died in motor vehicle-related accidents, contributing to a total death toll of 3,606. Over 300 people lost their lives in accidents involving heavy-duty trucks.

Maintain as much distance as possible from a commercial truck’s blind spot to reduce the risk of being hit by the car as you pass it. The truck’s passenger side has a larger blind spot than the driver’s, making it the riskiest seating choice. When changing lanes, passing must occur on the driver’s side only.
