According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a motorcyclist died after a fatal collision east of Kingsburg on Thursday afternoon, August 25, 2022.
Officers say the fatal accident occurred after 3:30 p.m. on Road 24 & State Route 201 east of Kingsburg.
A 70-year-old man was driving southbound on Road 24 in a pickup truck, while a 34-year-old motorcyclist was traveling westbound on State Route 201 at an unknown speed.
The pickup truck driver had a controlled stop at Road 24, while the motorcyclist riding down State Route 201 did not have a stop sign.
According to CHP, the driver said he looked both ways before entering the intersection to turn left.
The motorcyclist hit the side of the pickup truck and was ejected off his motorcycle as a result of the collision.
The motorcycle driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
He was wearing a helmet, and officers do not suspect alcohol was involved.
Fatal Motorcycle Accident Statistics
There were 5,014 motorcycle-related deaths in 2012, as reported by the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation. The early 1980s established a downward trend, but beginning in 1998, a rise was seen that lasted until 2008.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that bikers have a whopping 16 times higher risk of injury and 35 times higher risk of death in a car accident compared to people riding as passengers.
Almost two-thirds of motorcycle accidents occur at intersections, most of which are caused by cars that fail to see the bike. Due to their reduced size, motorcycles are more vulnerable to collisions.
Nearly all of California’s highways are featured on motorcycleroads.com’s “Top 100 Motorcycle Roads” list. There are more motorcycles registered in this state than in any other in the country. About 800,000 motorcycles have been registered in the state.
According to estimates, 541 motorcyclists were killed, and 15,527 were injured in the United States in 2017.
