Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Some of the deadliest auto accidents on the road involve pedestrians. This is mainly because pedestrians are especially vulnerable to road hazards. After all, they don’t have any safety precautions in place in case of an accident.

Between 2007 and 2016, the United States saw an increase in pedestrian fatalities of 27%, while other traffic-related deaths fell by 14%, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

In the United States in 2017, there were 5,977 pedestrian fatalities. At least one pedestrian accident fatality occurs every 88 minutes.

In car accidents, pedestrians frequently suffer life-threatening injuries or pass away. When crossing the street, people who are struck by cars may sustain internal wounds, broken bones, and minor abrasions and bruises. Broken bones and untreated internal injuries can cause death or long-term disability.

Pedestrians should only cross roads and sidewalks at designated crosswalks to ensure their safety.
