Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicycle accidents on public roads can be caused by many things, many of which have to do with the driver. Some common reasons are unsafe lane changes, turning without looking for cyclists, driving too close to bike lanes and shoulders, and using a cell phone while driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 840 bicyclists were killed in vehicle-related accidents in 2016. The number of avoidable deaths from bicycle transportation accidents climbed by 16% in 2020 and 44% in the previous decade.

Whether you ride your bike to work, for exercise, or because you are a serious cyclist, there are risks every time you hit the road. Even though bike riders have the same rights and privileges as drivers, it’s no secret that many drivers treat cyclists like they’re not as important as drivers. Drivers often put cyclists in dangerous situations by riding on their back wheels or passing with almost no room to spare. Drivers who aren’t paying attention can cause accidents before they even realize that cyclists are on the road.
