According to Officer Mike Lassig, the fatal crash happened around 2:20 p.m. on the 74 near Sultanas Road.

The victim was driving northbound on Sultanas when he came to a stop where the two-lane road met the two-lane highway.

Traffic Accident Statistics

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, traffic fatalities decreased 5.1% from 3,798 in 2018 to 3,606 in 2019. The 2019 Mileage Death Rate (MDR) – fatalities per 100 million miles traveled – is 1.06.

Traffic accidents happen for a variety of reasons. While road problems or safety facilities cause some accidents, most traffic accidents are caused by drivers’ failure to follow regulations, consider pedestrians, and recognize dangerous behaviors:

Unsafe road conditions. Unsafe road environments are caused by external factors that drivers cannot control, such as reduced visibility due to darkness, slick surfaces, insufficient safety facilities, inadequately repaired vehicles, pedestrians, or other vehicles that suddenly get in the way.

Inadequate driver knowledge. Ignorance is a common cause of traffic accidents. The majority of a driver’s ability is gained through practice. This explains why so many new circumstances result in accidents. If you know what happens when you speed or brake suddenly in unusual conditions such as rain, snow, or a winding road, you will be cautious not to speed or brake suddenly.

Inability to recognize danger. While some drivers slow down when they recognize potential hazards in certain situations, others do not see any danger. These differences in danger recognition result from prior experiences and, more specifically, different standards. Drivers who are more eager to get to their destination as soon as possible are more likely to take risks.

Improper reasoning. Numerous types of incorrect thinking can lead to reckless driving. Such thinking includes believing that it is acceptable to violate traffic laws as long as you do not cause an accident, rushing to your destination even if you are not late, and viewing pedestrians on the road as obstacles.

Improper driving habits. Many drivers mistakenly believe that their unsafe driving habits do not pose a risk because they have yet to cause a traffic accident. This belief can reinforce bad habits, leading to fatal accidents.

Many traffic accidents occur due to poor prediction. Thus, you should drive with common sense so others can accurately predict your next moves.
