Motorcycle Crash Statistics

Motorcycle riders are more likely to get hurt on the road than people in private cars. When a motorcycle and a car collide, the rider of the bike almost always gets injured worse.

Seatbelts and airbags aren’t available to motorcycle riders, just like they aren’t to people who ride in cars. Also, the steel frame of a car doesn’t protect the rider’s body from the force of the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to get hurt and 35 times more likely to die than car passengers.

The road takes most of the time, the full force of a motorcycle accident, another car, a tree, or something else that can kill. They often get permanent injuries that make them unable to move and change how they live.

The number of deaths and injuries caused by motorcycles is going up all over the country. In 2017, the government also registered 8.7 million motorcycles. In 2019, 5,014 people died in motorcycle accidents.

According to the NHTSA, motorcycle helmets saved the lives of 1,872 people in 2017. If every motorcyclist had been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, it might have saved 749 more lives. Helmets can cut the risk of death by 37% on motorcycles and by 41% for passengers on motorcycles.
