An overview of DUI accidents

DUI accidents are a serious problem in the United States. Every day, people are killed or injured in accidents caused by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In fact, DUI accidents are one of the leading causes of death and injury in the country. There were 10,874 automobile accident fatalities in 2010. 4,426 were caused by drunk drivers with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08% or higher. This accounted for 41% of all automobile fatalities that year.

Despite public awareness campaigns and stricter laws, drunk driving fatalities have remained relatively steady over the past decade. The best way to reduce the number of drunk driving fatalities is to prevent people from driving while intoxicated in the first place. This can be accomplished through education, enforcement, and technology.

Public awareness campaigns can help to educate people about the dangers of drunk driving and discourage them from getting behind the wheel after drinking. Law enforcement efforts such as sobriety checkpoints and random breathalyzer tests can also help stop people from driving while intoxicated.

Finally, technology can be used to prevent drunk drivers from starting their vehicles. Drunk drivers typically have difficulty starting their engines due to impaired motor skills. However, ignition interlocks can be installed on vehicles that require the driver to pass a breathalyzer test before the engine starts. By combining these strategies, it is possible to reduce the number of automobile accidents caused by drunk drivers and save lives.
